Systematic list of bird species recorded in South Korea
March 28 - April 3 2003, Martin Sutherland and Sona Kim

The figures in parentheses indicate the number of dates on which the species was recorded. This was a rather brief visit with just seven days in the country.

Brief itinerary:

  • March 28th: Waegwan: south along river to farmland.

  • March 29th: Waegwan: south along river to farmland.

  • March 30th: Waegwan: north along river into forest. Kimchon Jikjisa p.m.

  • March 31st: Waegwan: north and south along river.

  • April 1st: Upo Wetland.

  • April 2nd: Suncheon Bay a.m. and Chunam p.m.

  • April 3rd: Waegwan.

 

  • Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis (1) Heard at Tongpan, Chunam on 2nd April.

  • Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax (1) A flock of approximately 250 disturbed at Tongpan, Chunam on 2nd April.

  • Great White Egret Egretta alba (7) Up to three daily on the Nakdong River at Waegwan, 10 at Upo Wetland on 1st and several Suncheon Bay and Chunam areas.

  • Intermediate Egret Egretta intermedius (1) 30+ in the Suncheon Bay area on 2nd April.

  • Little Egret Egretta garzetta (7) Up to 15 at Waegwan, 10+ Upo Wetland and common in the Suncheon Bay and Chunam areas.

  • Grey Heron Ardea cinerea (7) 40+ at Upo Wetland and common at SunB and Chunam.

  • Common Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia (1) Eight at Upo Wetland.

  • Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus (1) One at Upo Wetland.

  • Bean Goose Anser fabalis (2) 14 at Upo Wetland and six at Chunam.

  • Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna (1) 3000+ in Suncheon Bay.

  • European Wigeon Anas penelope (1) Five at Upo Wetland.

  • Falcated Teal Anas falcata (2) Two at Upo Wetland and four at Chunam.

  • Gadwall Anas strepera (3) 10 at Upo Wetland, 15 at Tongpan, Chunam and three at Waegwan on 3rd.

  • Common Teal Anas crecca (7) Up to 100 daily on the Nakdong River at Waegwan and 150 at Upo Wetland the largest counts.

  • Mallard Anas platyrhynchos (7) Up to 50 daily at Waegwan and 150 at Upo Wetland the largest counts.

  • Spot-billed Duck Anas poecilorhyncha (7) Up to 50 daily at Waegwan and 100 at Upo Wetland the largest counts.

  • Pintail Anas acuta (2) 75 at Upo Wetland and common at Chunam and Suncheon Bay.

  • Shoveler Anas clypeata (4) One or two at Waegwan on two dates, 250 at Upo Wetland and common at Chunam and Suncheon Bay.

  • Common Pochard Aythya ferina (3) One or two at Waegwan on two dates and 75+ at Chunam.

  • Tufted Duck Anas fuligula (2) Three at Upo Wetland and 10 at Tongpan, Chunam.

  • Goosander Mergus merganser (4) Noted on four dates on the Nakdong River at Waegwan with six there on 30th.

  • Northern Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus (2) Singles noted at Waegwan and Upo Wetland.

  • Common Kestrel Falco tinnunculus (4) One to three noted at several localities.

  • Ring-necked Pheasant Phasianus colchicus (5) 10 at Upo Wetland, one at Suncheon Bay.

  • Hooded Crane Grus monacha (1) One adult bird at Suncheon Bay.

  • Coot Fulica atra (1) 200+ at Chunam.

  • Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus (1) One at Chunam.

  • Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius (7) Daily at Waegwan with 20+ on 3rd. Also 10 Upo and three Chunam.

  • Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus (1) 100+ at Suncheon Bay and five at Chunam.

  • Grey Plover Pluvialis squatarola (2) One at Upo and 60+ at Suncheon Bay.

  • Great Knot Calidris tenuirostris (1) 10+ at Suncheon Bay.

  • Sharp-tailed Sandpiper Calidris acuminata (1) Two at Suncheon Bay.

  • Dunlin Calidris alpina (1) At least 7000 at a high tide roost at Suncheon Bay.

  • Ruff Philomachus pugnax (1) Four at Chunam.

  • Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago (2) 15 at Upo and 15 at Chunam.

  • Long-billed Dowitcher Limnodromus scolopaceus (1) One (photographed) at Chunam.

  • Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica (1) At least 600 at the high roost in Suncheon Bay.

  • Eastern Curlew Numenius madagascariensis (1) 50+ at Suncheon Bay.

  • Green Sandpiper Tringa ochropus (1) One at Waegwan on 28th.

  • Wood Sandpiper Tringa glareola (1) Seven at Upo Wetland.

  • Spotted Redshank Tringa erythropus (2) One at Upo Wetland and 31 at Chunam.

  • Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus (4) 300+ at Suncheon Bay, up to 15 at Waegwan.

  • Black-tailed Gull Larus crassirostris (1) Two at Suncheon Bay.

  • Common Gull Larus canus (1) 250 at Suncheon Bay.

  • Vega Gull Larus (argentatus) vegae (5) one or two most days at Waegwan, 50 at Suncheon Bay.

  • Feral Pigeon Columba livia (7) Widespread.

  • Rufous Turtle Dove Streptopilia orientalis (7) Common and widespread.

  • Pacific Swift Apus pacificus (1) 25+ at Chunam.

  • Kingfisher Alcedo atthis (1) One at Upo Wetland.

  • Grey-headed Woodpecker Picus canus (2) Heard at Upo Wetland and at Waegwan.

  • White-backed Woodpecker Picoides leucotos (1) Two in the forest at Waegwan on 30th.

  • Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker Picoides kizuki (2) Up to three on two dates in the forest at Waegwan.

  • Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica (4) Noted from 31st with 100 at Suncheon Bay and 350 at Chunam.

  • Olive-backed Pipit Anthus hodgsoni (5) Up to 15 most days at Waegwan and two at Upo Wetland.

  • Buff-bellied Pipit Anthus rubescens (7) Up to 15 daily along the river at Waegwan, five at Upo Wetland and noted at Chunam.

  • Grey Wagtail Motacilla cinerea (1) One at Waegwan on 30th.

  • White Wagtail Motacilla alba (6) Daily along the river at Waegwan with 50+ on 31st. Most identified were M.a.leucopsis but one ocularis also noted. Few elsewhere.

  • Black-backed Wagtail Motacilla lugens (4) On the Nakdong River at Waegwan two 28th and 30th, 12 on 3rd. Also one at Suncheon Bay.

  • Japanese Wagtail Motacilla grandis (1) One at Waegwan on 30th.

  • Brown-eared Bulbul Hypsipetes amaurotis (7) Common and widespread.

  • Bull-headed Shrike Lanius bucephalus (1) Much scarcer than normal. Five Suncheon Bay/Chunam on 2nd but none noted at Waegwan where usually small numbers resident.

  • Daurian Redstart Phoenicurus auroreus (7) Up to five daily at Waegwan and few noted elsewhere.

  • Dusky Thrush Turdus naumann eunomus (6) Up to eight daily at Waegwan, 12 at Upo Wetland and 20 at Chunam.

  • Naumann's Thrush Turdus naumann naumanni (2) Singles at Waegwan on 30th and at Chunam.

  • Pale Thrush Turdus pallidus (1) One at Waegwan on 30th.

  • Vinous-throated Parrotbill Paradoxornis webbianus (6) Small numbers daily at waegwan, 75+ at Upo Wetland and 50 at Chunam.

  • Long-tailed Tit Aegithalos caudatus (3) Small numbers noted at Waegwan, Kimchon Jikjisa, Upo Wetland and Chunam.

  • Marsh Tit Parus palustris (1) Noted at Waegwan and Kimchon Jikjisa on 30th.

  • Great Tit Parus major (7) Small numbers daily.

  • Varied Tit Parus varius (1) Two in the forest at Waegwan on 30th.

  • Eurasian Nuthatch Sitta europaea (1) One or two at Kimchon Jikjisa on 30th.

  • Jay Garrulus glandarius (1) Small numbers in the forest at Waegwan and Kimchon Jikjisa.

  • Azure-winged Magpie Cyanopica cyana (1) Eight at Suncheon Bay.

  • Black-billed Magpie Pica pica (7) Common and widespread.

  • Carrion Crow Corvus corone (1) Three at Waegwan on 30th was the only record.

  • Jungle Crow Corvus macrorhychos (2) One or two at Upo Wetland and one at Chunam.

  • Grey Starling Sturnus cineraceus (7) Up to 10 daily at Waegwan, 50+ at Chunam and a few at other sites.

  • Tree Sparrow Passer montanus (7) Common and widespread.

  • Oriental Greenfinch Carduelis sinica (5) Up to five most days at Waegwan, few Suncheon Bay.

  • Siskin Carduelis spinus (3) Three at Waegwan on 30th, 40 at Upo Wetland and 60 near Suncheon Bay.

  • Hawfinch Coccathraustes coccathraustes (1) One near Suncheon Bay.

  • Yellow-throated Bunting Emberiza elegans (1) 20 at Waegwan on 30th.

  • Rustic Bunting Emberiza rustica (1) 10 at Waegwan on 28th.

  • Little Bunting Emberiza pusilla (1) One at Waegwan on 28th.

  • Reed Bunting Emberiza schoeniclus (1) One at Suncheon Bay.
